I have enjoyed the books for 35 years, reading them over, and over many times in those 35 years. They have been such a pleasure for me and relieved many stressful times just through the pure pleasure of reading the wonderful stories.

As a child, the books and my love of animals made me want to be a vet. It was all I studied to be from about 5 years of age onward. The only thing that eventually stopped me was that I was absolutely AWFUL at chemistry. But my love of animals endured, as did the knowledge I had gained studying all those years to become a vet. My other love was maths, and I was, and am, extremely good at number-crunching. So instead of becoming a veterinarian, I became an accountant who specialized throughout my career in animal-related bookwork and tax work. It gave me great pleasure to be able to "talk shop" with clients and know that my first career choice helped them so much, even though it didn't pan out for me. To this day, the tales in those books have given me great joy. From Tricki Woo giving me giggles to the tears I always shed reading about the lovely dog Amber with mange, I will forever treasure these stories.

I was first attracted to your dad's books in the 70's because of the titles. All Things Bright and Beautiful is one of my favorite hymns. I am not a great animal lover, but the books taught me so much and brought me so much joy. I've always thought what a hard life he had, but I could tell from the books that he loved it. It taught me that lesson, if you're doing what you love you should be happy even when the going gets rough. I just re-watched the original show and watched the new show for the first time. I so enjoy reading the books over and over again. When I used to work an hour away from home and was in bumper to bumper traffic that made it much longer than that even twice a day I listened to the books on tape - over and over again. They always made me laugh, so I wonder what people in the car's around me thought lol. Thank you so much for your book and this video giving us insight into the real man behind James Herriott!

I always remember the Love and gentle kindness that was expressed in all the books. There was a peaceful quality in them that was so soothing. I always looked forward with great eagerness to read the books or see the next week's serial on TV. Of all the books that I have read, these books have always remained my favorite because of the love and joy in them.

I read all of his books and what a pleasure it was too. There were more than one time that I laughed for he had such a talent for describing the most mundane events. When he described his arrival at the vet clinic to take up his job, rang the bell and there arrived I don't know how many dogs of all sizes, pounding against the door, barking viciously. When the door opened, the housekeeper let out an order and off the dogs went very sheepishly, their tails between their legs no longer the monsters they pretended to be. I still have all his books, have read them more than once with a long period between and one day will read them again for they offer such entertainment that you can never tire of his storytelling. Now, I watched the 1st series of Creatures Great and Small which I loved, the 2nd series not so much.

While serving in the US Army and newly stationed in Okinawa, I was looking for something to do on a rainy Saturday. So I went to the dayroom area and saw a small bookcase with some books. I selected “All Creatures Great and Small” and fell in love with the story. So through the years I purchased and read over and over again the series and my kids grew up hearing the stories. I’ve watched the series several times and am now watching the series on PBS.

Mr. Wight! I was a teenager when I got hold some of your father's books full of more than interesting stories. Although I am a country girl, it opened up a new world for me. His stories are so heartwarming. Since then, I have re-read them several times, because I always felt almost like a family member and that I was sitting with them on the sofa in the living room. I like all the characters, the serious Sigfried, the foolish Tristan, Mrs.Hall who sometimes behave as a good understanting mother, and even the grumpy peasants, Tricky Woo and so on. One of our TV channels started showing the new version (2022) under the title "The praise of life". Today, I'm retired, but I watch every episode of it unwaveringly, most of the morning repeats as well. Mr. Harriot must have been a great person, I am very glad to have found his books. Sorry I can not tell him a big thank you.

I think I am re reading your Dad's glorious books for about the 6th time, or more, at nearly 84. As the world...now 2022... gets seemingly more and more troubled, your father's words.....some of the warmest, most human, funny, beautiful, insightful I have ever read, bring such incredible balm and comfort ! Though I know them, those wonderful characters, stories..... almost by heart, they are endlessly comforting. Sometimes, like your father did, I have to stop for a moment and breathe in the glorious peaceful Yorkshire air, and marvel at his brilliant use of words. I can really smell the freshly baked scones or delicious ham he was given by those wonderful farmers as he came in to their warm kitchens, exhausted and freezing from his latest exertions in some far off barn. It just goes on and on, and yes...though his deep love of animals fills every page, it is the people, those wonderful characters who he saw, felt and described so well! I agree with someone who said if they were on a desert island , it is the Herriot books they would take. I am just now re-reading one or two chapters before sleeping every night, and feel safe, .....at home ! Thank you dear Alf for bringing so much joy and humanity into the world ! Your incredible sensitivity was what made you such a special person...and gave you sadly so much pain at times. I hope you are resting in DEEP PEACE now !!!!THANK YOU for it all !! 🙏🌞☘🐾🐃🌲🍀🍃🌎

Thank you for this little Film Jim, it brings back so many memories. I first met your Alf when he and Brian came to Jespers in Harrogate on Thursday afternoons. It was always fun to see him. I think he wrote articles for the Dalesman then. I often used to visit him at the Practice and also the New house after they moved. Your Mum was a lovely Lady, I had tea with them a couple of times and once when Rosie came over. Can't remember if the Children were there too. Also met you once, you were with him up in the hills and I was out with friends walking. The Last time I came over to the house was again just a social call after he had rung to ask if I was going to be over in the area that Friday and to call in. Your Mum said was sat in the Lounge with Bodie who jumped off the settee and greated me as I walked in. We went up to his study and chatted for a long time and he gave me some books and signed them for me and my daughters. It was an emotional drive home and now as I am listening to Audio books while driving it all comes back to me. Famous Writer or not it was an honour to know your Dad, your Mum too of course. My sister bought your Biography on Alf a few years ago for one of my Birthdays, I enjoyed it immensely and so will my 10 year old grandaughter who is an avid reader of his already.

Reading the Real James Herriot biography by his son Jim Wight was an absolute joy and revelation. It added a fifth dimension to the already many layered James Herriot universe. I think the key difference between the celebrated authors who haunt the rarified world of high brow literature and the more 'popular' writers like Alf Wight is the deep, cherished and eternal love that the readers have for the books of the latter.

When I first read the book, which I had stumbled on, I was too young a teen to appreciate it, I only liked animals, so the title drew me. Soon after by chance I started watching the series, I was hooked. So well made and scripted, a masterpiece. 30 years went by since I had seen it, then I watched it again, just as impressed as when I first watched it as a teen.
